Malaysia Loves Numbers

Have you heard of 1Malaysia, 15Malaysia and Malaysians Unite for Road Safety 090909?

1malaysia logo

In short, 1Malaysia is a vision, or theme, brought up by our current Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Razak. 15Malaysia is a project of 15 short films produced by Malaysian producers. And Malaysians Unite for Road Safety 090909, which encourages citizens to pledge for a change that has no relevance to the date.

But 090909 is a nice date though. Thanks for reminding me about my mum’s birthday. She’s gonna say I’m a good son. ;)

Okay, this year’s Independence Day theme is 1Malaysia, Rakyat Didahulukan, Pencapaian Diutamakan (means Citizen First, Achievement Prioritized). Sounds nice, but there are many questions raised regarding the meaning of the theme. Well, I’m not gonna mention it. Don’t wanna get detained by ISA, do I?

1malaysia

Oh by the way, have you visited the 1Malaysia website? Check it out, and you’ll realize that it’s more of a personal website for our Prime Minister. I find it a little weird.

Dear Malaysia’s Prime Minister, we know 1Malaysia is your baby but please, relate 1Malaysia website more to Malaysia as a whole instead of putting your faces, your flickr link, your youtube videos and your twitter link there? 1Malaysia doesn’t mean 1Person okay… Even President Barack Obama has his own website at barackobama.com instead of organizingforamerica.com.

Next, I’m not sure why many is obsessed with the 15Malaysia project. I watched a few of them and I must say, there is nothing so significant about the videos. Yeah, it’s mentioned that the films could deal with socio-political issues in Malaysia. Certainly a great intention.

But come on, if short films can solve such issues, these issues would have been solved long long ago.

15malaysia

All the producers showing their teeth.

Honestly, I think the short films are produced just for the sake of producing. Malaysians watch it and go oooooohhh and aaaaahhhhh – but next, nothing happens.

Finally, pledging to make Malaysian roads a better place? I’m really amused with the domain of this website – 090909.org.my. They certainly do love relating to numbers huh? There, Malaysians make pledges, by stating the changes they hope to make, to promote a safer road environment. Effective or not?

malaysians unite for road safety 090909

Some may pledge to obey the rules and regulations, but in the end – they still drive over the speed limit. And when asked why, they answer – No speed trap mah! Urgent lah! Or…

MY WIFE IS HAVING A BABY!

Know what, even Iron Man made a pledge.

iron man

One of the submitted pledge. Cool huh?

So, our dear Malaysia, great thoughtful objectives and goals. But… all the best lah!

kenwooi.com wish you a HAPPY MERDEKA DAY!

  • Especially agree with the 1malaysia issue! How come our beloved PM uses the domain for his own personal blog? It’s as you said, the content of the 1malaysia site should actually be about 1malaysia!

Then again, a lot of people are still of the opinion that the 1malaysia concept is still too vague / unclear to be properly implemented or used as the basis for our development up to 2020. What do you think?

hanseong on 31 August, 2009 at 12:23 PM
  • LOL All prime ministers love that
    Mahathir – Wawasan 2020
    Badawi – Misi 2050

they always set their target at the date when they probably die, so no one can blame them if they’re not achieved.

should start by getting police roadblocks to be more brightly litted. i got the fright of my life when i suddenly saw policemen in the dark and the blocked off road. luckily i wasnt driving very fast in order to make an abrupt brake.

  • You might have missed it, so I’d suggest you go to the 1Malaysia website’s FAQ. This is what it says:

    Q: What is 1Malaysia.com.my?
A: 1Malaysia.com.my is the personal website of Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak.

    It IS his personal website.

We all know that 1Malaysia is his brainchild, so we can’t exactly fault him for using it as his domain, although it is really a terrible choice.

For a more technical site for 1Malaysia, visit the Yayasan 1Malaysia site (http://www.1malaysia.org.my/).

It seems that you might be misguided on the intention of 15Malaysia. What they actually said on the site was that the films “deal with the issues”, as in portray them, not “could deal” as in solve them.

15Malaysia is an art project displaying 15 different facets of Malaysia from 15 different filmmakers. Nothing more.

If any, they have proven that you can take any slogans like “1Malaysia”, change it into “15Malaysia” and made it more palatable and makes more sense.

As for pledging for 090909, well recognising the problem is the first step to curbing it.

  • Hi Ken, interesting blog posting.
Though I find it rather confusing. I guess there’s always the much publicised pledges and hand raisings on topics the government finds useful, and as you mentioned, forgotten later.
These even happen during my times back in the 60′s….and then forgotten, not only by the people, but by the authorities too….
like we used to say those days, “where got meaning”? Ha ha.
    Have a nice day…..Lee.

  • Numbers are good, Ken, afterall we are a Magnum 4D/Sports Toto/Da Ma Cai society. haha…

    Nice post..

Happysurfer on 1 September, 2009 at 6:54 PM
  • hey kenwooi,

for the 1malaysia, i think it can be done. it can be done if we all believe it. it was easy to tell people we are independent but to tell them that we are united- we are family. that is difficult.
but i had to say, from the previous vision from previous prime minister, i had doubts on the word 1malaysis by the now prime minister.

for road safety, i think it was prudent to said, this is malaysia and dont speed just because you can. and proton cars are not meant to go up 140 in karak highway. all in all, driver is the problem, every year they pledge to increase the number of malaysian but every year malaysian pledge to reduce these number on the road.

090909 might just as well 90,909 death on the road but it can also meant 90,909 families dead or person who lost their family on the road. who are there to make the difference?

    =D

yinkoon on 1 September, 2009 at 7:57 PM
