Fabulous Chendol at Penang Road
Penang Island is a great place to visit. The last time I was there was in 2003. No obvious changes – the same old Penang Bridge and Komtar still standing tall. However, the roads are a little crowded already.
I noticed that parked cars have a slip of paper on their windshield. No, they’re not fine tickets by the authorities for illegal parking.
They’re actually parking tickets. It’s a parking system implemented by the Penang government. A red one means the owner has paid, and a yellow one means otherwise. Almost every road has a “guardian” in-charge of collecting the parking payment.
So far I think Penang is the only state with this system. Ipoh and Malacca use the “scratch-and-win” parking tickets method.
Oh yeah, just wanna say “helo” with the public telephone booth along Penang Road.
The first thing that attracted me along Penang Road was the police station.
That’s one massive police station. The one in Ipoh is not even half of that size. However I rarely see police officers around. They must be relaxing comfortably inside.
Hawker stalls are along the road – selling souvenirs, food, stuffs and stuffs. Whatever you want, you name it.
One of the stalls even proclaimed that it has has-it-all top-up cards.
And if you’re looking for ingredients to make your own chendol, they have it here too.
Chendol, cincau, pink stuff, black stuff and white stuff. Anything also got.
One unique “artifact” that can be seen along Penang Road is the railing tracks of the Electronic Tram, or also known as the Trolley Bus, back then.
It was used to transport goods and people during the colonization period of the British. Too bad it isn’t available anymore, or else it’ll be so special right? Can sit chu-chu train there!
Anyway, Joo Hooi Cafe is a recognized food outlet along the stretch of shops at Penang Road.
There, you can have various Penang delicacies but I only tried Penang Laksa.
I don’t fancy Laksa but it’s definitely one of Penang’s typical foods.
Okay, here’s the main feature of this entry – the chendol stall right beside Joo Hooi Cafe. There are two actually, but I’m only recommending one stall – the better, tastier one!
Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. Don’t know why they name themselves with “Chendul” instead of the usual “Chendol”.
For your information, the chendol consists of strips of smooth green pandan noodles made from rice flour, red beans, coconut milk and shaved ice, topped with Malacca Sugar syrup. Simply delicious!
Just look at the amount of chendol they give. I went “WOW” when I saw the bowl. And when I ate my first scoop, double “WOW”. Damn ho chiak ar!
So when you’re visiting Penang Island, you better not miss it!
Alright, stay tuned for more entries on Penang! =)

The last time I went to penang was like 10 years ago. Chu Chu train? LOL
waikeong on 6 September, 2009 at 12:04 AMI am from penang, but for 20++ years, i have only seen the track, but no chu chu train. I propose that the government should make a chu chu train for tourism purposes.

peteformation on 6 September, 2009 at 12:02 PMsomeimes owners will try to put the pink slip on their car to cheat the parking attendant they have paid but still the attendant is much smarter because they check!

But I haven’t tried the Penang one so I can’t really make a comparison.
SO YOU GO DO THAT , OKAY AND TELL ME WHICH IS BETTER.
YAH GOOD THANKS. :D
AHAH, you know what’s funny?
How you went like.. Penang Island’s a great place..

Yes, the call of Penang is very strong, and I shall return.
Uncle Lee on 6 September, 2009 at 7:37 PMHave fun and keep well. Lee.
ps, surprised to note they still have those parking tickets….remember those days of chasing or looking for the ticket guys to pay. They always disappear fast too.
I’ve tried the Chendul from that stall. It’s just tasted average to me. No offence intended. ;)

messi on 13 September, 2009 at 10:18 PMI LOVE laksa of any kind. The spicy coconut milk one, and the slightly sourish Laksa Penang. Oh food glorious food.
I also love Chendol. I cannot fathom anyone who doesn’t like it. I’m already so satisfied with the Chendol I can find in Singapore… If it’s any better in Penang, I’d definitely have to give it a try one day. Thank God for us being Southeast Asians.
Nura on 14 September, 2009 at 1:39 AMCendol really make me drooling now especially during the hot weather.
TOLANIC on 15 September, 2009 at 9:33 PMoh wow. i never actually notice the rail tracks! the penang road chendol is overrrrrated. didn’t actually tot it was good. haha
Chef MEL on 24 September, 2009 at 8:45 AMPai seh, I never been to Penang before. But I know the place has a lot of good food.
I think assam laksa normally is a girl’s food. My husband dislike it too.
Joanne Tiew on 1 October, 2009 at 12:18 AMoh whats the difference between teochew cendol n other normal cendol ? just curious hehehe haven’t been to penang for a long time .. time to hit the road!!
Swee on 2 October, 2009 at 12:54 PMyup, one of the better ones. comparable to Melaka’s version, IMO.
though Joo Hooi charges 50 cents extra if you’re having the cendol inside the shop.
luckily they opened a shop of their own, directly behind this one. so you can have your cendol, seated, with fans inside the comfort of a shop.
J2Kfm on 2 October, 2009 at 5:53 PMnice cendol…missing it lor…find time go eat again…
nikel khor on 1 December, 2009 at 8:19 PMnow… i’m hungry especially after the cendol!
