Pinang Peranakan Mansion at Penang
Located on the Penang Island, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion was a home of a rich Baba. Now as a museum, it offers an experience into the Peranankan lifestyle and traditions.
According to its official website, this Chinese courtyard house is a typical large Baba home of eclectic style, incorporating Chinese carved-wood panels, English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks.
The admission fee costs RM10 for an adult and you’ll get an information brochure and a sticker in return.
And today, kenwooi.com will bring you on another virtual tour into the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. :)
As you enter the building, you’ll be greeted by the front hall. The center area is open-air and it’s surrounded by partitions of rooms for different purposes.
The main staircase is a distinct feature of the European influence which uses of both local and imported materials. To get to the upper floor, you’re required to take off your shoes.
This western-style dining room is for entertaining the guests from Europe.
With over thousands of antiques and collectibles on display, this Baba-Nyonya museum is definitely well-preserved and very valuable.
One of the jewelery showcases available.
Antique plates being displayed in a room.
Drawings of a couple from the older generation. If I’m not mistaken, the man is the one who built the mansion – Kapitan China Chung Keng Kwee. He was a wealthy Hakka triad leader.
This is a wooden chair, or bed? It looks like a sofa bed, except that it’s hard.
I can’t help but to pose like a king relaxing while my concubines accompany me. I’m gonna have them wear modern cheongsam with boots.
Life is certainly good.
Anyway, behind the mansion – there’s a backyard.
At the back, there’s a place where traditional Chinese medicine and herbs are prepared.
A small kitchen area and a dining table for the servants. Also, more antiques such as olden wooden chairs and traditional food mashers.
Well, that’s roughly all. Even though the Pinang Peranakan Mansion offers an insight into a rich Peranankan’s way of living, it’s just worth a visit.
Oh by the way, did you know that the famous Singaporean drama series – The Little Nyonya – used the mansion as one of the main shooting locations?
Take a look at these pictures.
Above, the casts posed at one of the rooms. And the bottom photo, taken at the upper floor.
Hmm… wait a minute. Something’s not right with one of the casts on the photos. I wonder which one…
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the brief virtual tour around the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. :)

One thing i hate about museums is it depicts only the RICH lifestyle of RICH peranakans. *agitated* My maternal grandparents are peranakan and they are so poor! Where got house like this with herbs room and backyards… *emo*
