Yet Another Chinese New Year

Yet Another Chinese New Year

So here we go, another round of Chinese New Year. And believe it or not, after experiencing it for more than 2 decades, it’s pretty… uninteresting these days.

Comparing the Chinese New Year to the past, it doesn’t have the “omph” anymore. Things seems rather ordinary – that’s how I feel lah.

Let’s compare it with the past – back then when I was a kid, my parents used to dress me up in red attire. It’s supposedly a good sign to usher the new year.

With much naivety, I probably felt it was something awesome. Dressing up in red, I mean. Maybe it was because of the red Power Ranger.

When I was a kid, Chinese New Year used to be a fun occasion. On the television, there were people dancing and singing. They smile, shake their joint hands, crash into temples and Chinese mini markets and do all sorts of funny acts.

Sorry it’s not playable, it’s just an image. I don’t want dong dong dong chiang song on my blog.

Anyway, I literally watched all that on the television when I was a kid. How can? But I still do that these days, staring blankly at the screen though.

Also, it was kinda fun (now annoying) to listen to Chinese songs last time. It created the mood of celebration. But now, there are various remixes and covers that adapted the modern trend. Me no likey.

But right now, years ahead of my childhood – Chinese New Year is just like any other ordinary long holiday. You get to take time off from work, go back hometown and just relax.

Furthermore, I don’t dress up in red anymore. Black is the new red.

Anyway back then, it was fun to visit relatives. My parents bring us on road trips and we collect ang pao wherever we go.

Although it’s still the same now – visit and collect ang pao – meeting relatives is another matter. It’s the only time they can be busy body and conduct an “interrogation” on you. For example, about your work life.

Back then, we used to receive greeting cards and wishes from relatives and display it around the house. But with advance technology nowadays, many resort to use Facebook to make wishes.

It’s further proven when our Prime Minister (for the first time in history, maybe it’ll be a new entry in the Malaysia Book of Records) sends CNY greetings to us via email and SMS.

Oh wait, that’s actually not from the PM himself. It’s actually the system. Not sincere also right?

Even though various changes happened over time, I still look forward to the Yee Sang dish.

It’s the only time where I can get messy on the table and my family won’t think I’m a naughty boy. Oh yeah, I love the crunchy thing a lot!

I’ll surely take that the most! Crunch!

Also, it’s undeniable that Chinese New Year a suitable time for me to gather with friends and family. It’s not like I get to meet a bunch of my high school friends and talk about old times any other day right?

Anyway, let’s put the typical traditions aside, and do something interesting this year – why not get a pet rabbit for this Rabbit Year?

How about a white rabbit?

Or a brown one? Cuter right?

Or… buy DVDs of Bugs Bunny?

Okay lah, I think I’ll go with the last bunny! Can can can? :D

Alright jokes aside, would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year.
